First it was the spinach…now it is green lettuce, bottled carrot juice and some beef. Whatever is going on with the food industry, it’s causing an alarming media scare nationwide. This leads me to the question, can organic foods possibly be safer than commercial?

According to several news reports, it is believed that the lettuce and spinach e-coli strain was caused by a tainted water source being used for irrigation. And the bottled carrot juice illnesses were caused by cases of botchelism!!

It is my understanding that the farms in question are all commercial growers who use chemicals to kill unwanted, and sometimes deadly, bacteria. So is it possible that organic foods leave us at an even greater risk for infection because they don’t use the chemicals??

With the green revolution that’s occuring in this country, I believe this question must be addressed. Are we safer to eat organic with these fatal strains of bacteria roaming around that sometimes manage to make their way into the crops?

Is organic safer? If so, why? Or do you believe otherwise? That commercially grown fruits, vegetables, meats and dairy products are safer because they use chemicals used to kill bacteria.

I would love to hear arguments on both sides of this debate.
